Dislocate: Contemporary Dance and Conversation

September 24, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Dislocate, choreographed by Sarah Council, is a multi-sectioned dance work centered on themes of loss, perception, and paradigm shifts. This new work makes its debut in Greensboro after its official premiere at the North Carolina Dance Festival in Raleigh. Inspired by the experiences of international refugee families relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, Dislocate is a physical inquiry into stories of courage, expectation, disappointment, and sacrifice. In this thought-provoking work, performers with Sarah Council Dance Projects will navigate physical and emotional spaces; searching out moments of synchronicity, balance, and connection in a shifting, off-kilter environment. The performance, which features the recorded voices of new North Carolinians, will be followed by a discussion centered on the practice of telling stories through art and performance as activism. Sarah Council, area artists, and local organizations working with refugees and immigrants will lead the discussion. Council is the recipient of the inaugural North Carolina Dance Alliance and North Carolina Dance Festival New Works Award. This program is co-presented with the Dance Project.
